Key Responsibilities:
- Liaising with clients to establish what they need from their website. Researching their target market and competitors websites and advising on how best to proceed with their web development.
- Producing design concepts that incorporate the clients branding, are attractive to their target market and have a logical navigation path.
- Constructing web pages using a variety of coding methods including html, xhtml, Javascript, flash and others.
- Digitally optimising photos and graphics for the website using design packages such as Photoshop and Fireworks.
- Developing complex pages including forms and e-commerce sites to a standard that ensures security.
- Ensuring accessibility standards for disabled users are maintained across the website.
- Incorporating basic level Search Engine Optimisation techniques within the website.
- Regular testing of websites, identifying problems and fixing them.
- Updating websites as required.
- Suggesting areas for future web development.
A Typical Day as a Web Designer:
Your typical day as a Web Designer is likely to be anything other than typical. If you work for a design agency you could be working on a number of different projects at any given time. You will be responsible for presenting design concepts and then turning them into fully functional websites. There will be elements of maintenance including updating information, loading new content and pages and testing the functionality of websites. You will be required to take into account web accessibility standards, ensuring that disabled users, and people using alternatives to browsers, can still read the website. Some projects may include a link to other e-marketing techniques such as email marketing and banner advertising and you may be required to design for these activities.
